Denim Diaries with Emma Kalfus

Fashion editor, stylist and co-founder of SIDE-NOTE, Emma Kalfus, is the kind of woman who doesn't get rid of denim, she accumulates it. We caught up with the Sydney-based stylist on set to talk daily rituals, dressing on instinct, and why the perfect pair of jeans stays with you for life.

Go to Henne Denim? The Valentina Jean.

Every great pair of jeans accumulates a life. What's yours collected so far?

My jeans stay with me for years and years and I don’t really get rid of any. I own so many pairs and am always adding to my collection as styles go in and out of fashion but always come back around.

Who are you listening to, reading, or watching right now?

I’m obsessed with Kelela’s new music atm and just finished reading a great book by Lisa See called ‘The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane’. I like books that take me to foreign places and different periods of time and just feel so far removed my daily life.

Describe your style in three words?

Classic, nuanced, relaxed.

What makes a pair of denim feel instinctively yours?

I live in denim. I have 50+ pairs. I think what makes them feel mine is the ease they bring and the way in which they can be styled up or down. I don’t really own or often wear sweatpants. Jeans sort of fill their space in my wardrobe.

The person, place, or thing you keep coming back to for inspiration?

Travelling to new places.

Tell us about a trip or experience that changed how you dress.

My trips to Paris always get me refreshed and renew my personal style and I love Japanese mens style and feel like I reference them often.

One piece in your capsule wardrobe that you'd never part with?

I have a great worn in tan coloured cropped vintage leather jacket that’s on high rotation and know I’ll be wearing for years to come and I’ve not taken off the Akia jacket since I got him recently…

Take us through a perfect day in Sydney in your favourite Henne denim.

I start almost every day at SHUK in North Bondi for coffee/breakfast (as a freelancer, this is kind of the only thing that stays consistent in my routine), followed by Pilates at Fluidform, beach with the fam and then a long lunch or wines with my girlfriends…

Must-visits in Sydney?

I love drinks at Paradise in Potts Point and you can’t really go past Fratelli Paradiso for a delicious lunch or dinner.
